TRIBUTE PAID TO WALTERS
f.N Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON. The “Daily Sketch” cricket writer, Peter Smith, yesterday paid tribute to K. D. Walters’s century 7 in the second test, under the heading of “Wrecker Walters.”
“For 60 seemingly endless, enthralling minutes England looked capable of upsetting all the odds, the Australians and the cricket prophets by snatching victory in this tremendous second test,” Smith wrote.
“For the next three hours they stood by, confused, helpless to control the flood of I the most momentous runs you could ever wish to find on the last day of a match that had been declared dead 24 hours earlier. “That in a nutshell is the story of why England moved r,n to Sydney prepared to do battle again to settle this series once and for all. Thrills And Tension “Whoever said drawn matches lacked thrills and tension must think again. In those four hours England’s bowlers experienced every emotion from jubilation to deepest gloom, yet still come out of this match with their heads held high. “Higher still must be the heads of the seasoned old campaigner, Peter Burge, and his young slender co-destroy-er. Doug Walters. "These are the men England curse tonight while Australia sings their praises. “Every time Walters tackles
us—against the M.C.C. at Sydney, against England at Brisbane and again at Melbourne—he has come in at a moment of crisis," Smith said. “Each time he has walked away with a century behind him, danger gone and peace restored.”
