Clarke Ran Too Far

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE.

Australia’s champion distance runner, Ron Clarke, failed to break the Australian all-comers 5000 metres record last night—because he ran 30 yards too far. Clarke clocked 13min 39.8 sec—bettering his own national and Victorian State records but falling one-fifth of a second short of the allcomers' record set by the Russian, Vladimir Kuts, in 1956. When officials checked the track measurements later, they found the circuit was two yards and a half longer than the 440 yards it should have been. ®
