NEW YEAR PARTY

2000 Crowd At S prey don About 2000 persons saw in the New Year in Selwyn street outside the home of Mr R. H. Stillwell on Friday night. His home and garden, gaily decorated with coloured lights and Christmas motifs, attracted hundreds of visitors for the whole evening up to midnight. They were entertained by films and music by Mr J. Orr, and hundreds filed through Mr Stillwell’s theatrette to see his pictorial display. Hundreds of children watched the animated toys displayed in all the windows of the house. This is the eleventh year Mr Stillwell has entertained all visitors to his home, but the first that he has had a visitors’ book. More than 600 signed it on Friday night, and glancing through yesterday, Mr Stillwell noticed that the visitors came from many parts of New Zealand, all suburbs of Christchurch, and a few from overseas.

Just on midnight Mr Stillwell gave the crowd a New Year message, and then the Riccarton Pipe Band took over to play “Auld Lang Syne” for the hand-clasped visitors to join in the singing before marching down the street to welcome in 1966. Mr Stillwell will keep his decorations up until next Sunday.
