BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Sir Jack Butland, K.8.E., is a leading industrialist who has given away more than £250,000 in gifts and public benefactions. He was born in Hokitika and went to Auckland in the 19205, beginning business in the processing and packaging of local food products. In 1932 as chairman of the Honey Control Board he went to Britain and organised the marketing of New Zealand honey. After the Second World War he returned to the British Government £77,752, all the profit his company made on a war-time contract to supply cheese. Sir Francis Kitts. Kt., has been Mayor of Wellington since 1956. He has also been a member of the Wellington Harbour and Hospital Boards. From 1954 to 1960 he was member of Parliament for Wellington Central. Mr T. W. Perry, C.M.G., is managing-director of Thomas Perry and Sons, Ltd., and has been a director of the Reserve Bank since 1956 and of New Zealand Newspapers. Ltd., for 26 years. He is a director of several other public companies. He was born in Melbourne in 1899 and educated) at St. Albans School and Christchurch Technical College. Dr. L. A. Bennett, 0.8. E., a Christchurch surgeon, has been a member of the North Canterbury Hospital Board since 1959 and for several years he was chairman of the house and works committee. Mr A. A. Macfarlane, 0.8. E., a Rotherham farmer, recently completed a record six years as chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board. He has been a member of the Amuri County Council for many years and its chairman since 1947, and is also a member of the North Canterbury Nassella Tussock Boara. He is a director of the Christchurch Press Company, Ltd. Wing Commander J. M. Carr, 0.8. E., was born and educated in Christchurch. He is well-known in the athletic world as a hammer thrower and captained the New Zealand team to the 1954 Empire Games in Vancouver. Tn 1963 he was selected as “Sportsman of the Year” by the Welljington Athletic Centre and last year was manager of the athletic section of the New Zealand team at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Mr M. M. Chisholm, M.8.E., has been manager of the and Survey Department's Molesworth station since 1942. Much of the credit for the remarkable recovery of this country from a rabbitinfested run-down state is given to Mr Chisholm, who has also been able to show a profit on the operation. Rabbit destruction, oversowing, and stocking only with cattle have been features of the management of the 450,000 acres property. Mr J-. O. Cruse, M.8.E., is

deputy-superintendent of Paparua Prison, and was praised for his service during the riot at the prison on July 25. Squadron Leader J. L. N. Harris, M.8.E., of the R.N.Z.A.F. station, Wigram, joined the service in 1950, and has served with its strike wing both in New Zealand and the Far East as a pilot. Mr C. C. Hood, 8.E.M., a prison officer at Paparua, has been awarded the medal for gallantry during the riot at the prison.
