Two Knighthoods Awarded In New Year Honours List

Two new knighthoods are conferred in the New Year honours announced on Saturday. They are Sir Jack Butland, a prominent Auckland industrialist, and Sir Francis Kitts, Mayor of Wellington and a former Labour member of Parliament.

A wide range of other services to commerce, industry, farming, medicine, and local communities is recognised by other honours awarded throughout New Zealand. Prison officers’ work in the riots in Auckland and Christchurch is also recognised.

Sir Jack Butland is made a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire and Sir Francis Kitts is made a Knight Bachelor.

Among the Christchurch people honoured are Mr T. W. Perry, a well-known Christchurch businessman, who becomes a Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George: Dr. L. A. Bennett, a surgeon and British Empire Cancer Campaign Society chairman, and Mr A. A. Macfarlane, former chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board and a prominent figure in the Amuri county, both became officers of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. Mr O. H. Frankel, the plant scientist, and a former Christchurch resident, has been knighted in the Australian list Mr fnia Te Wiata, the Maori bass receives the M.B.E.
