Peterman Brilliant As Miler
Peterman proved he was one of the finds of the present season when he won the Great Northern Derby last week.
He confirmed that, and showed he was an unusually brilliant young stayer, by winning the £1525 King’s Plate, one mile, at Ellerslie on Saturday. Peterman did not race at two years last season, but has caught up fast. The King’s Plate was his fourth victory for the president of the Waikato Racing Club (Mr F. C. Johnstone), and his third successive win.
The Le Filou gelding’s next start may be in the Wellington Cup later this month. Peterman was privately timed to run his mile in Imin 34 4-ssec on Saturday, and the official time was only one-fifth of a second slower. Might a stablemate of the
brilliant Prince d’Amour, ensured a fast-run race. W. D. Skelton hunted last year’s Great Northern Foal Stakes winner into a clear lead straight away and run the opening three furlongs in 35 2-ssec, and the five in 58 3-ssec. Might’s brilliant gallop in the lead kept him four lengths clear on the home turn, but it left him without a flicker of resistance for the last furlong and a half. Copper King and Admiral Donnington chased him around the home turn, and were being tracked by the three-year-olds, Peterman and Urupukapuka. Peetrman, chased gamely by Urupukapuka, came to the front inside the final furlong and won well by half a length from Orupukapuka, which beat Copper King by three-quarters of a length. Admiral Donnington was a fast fading fourth, just beating the fasterfinishing Red Count.
