Rain Washes Out Day’s Play At Dunedin

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN. Rain washed out all play on the third and final day of the Plunket Shield match between Otago and Auckland on Saturday. It ended in a draw, with Otago taking first innings points.

Auckland, one wicket down for 24 at the end of the first day in reply to Otago’s first innings of 216, was all out for 157 an hour before tea on Friday and 59 runs in arrears. Otago batted through to tea, losing one wicket for 22 runs, and then rain caused the abandonment of the final session on Friday and the full day’s play on Saturday. Features of Auckland’s innings were a fine 50 by the former New Zealand representative, N. S. Harford, and excellent bowling by F. J. Cameron and the Otago professional coach, K. Ibadulla. Auckland was rocked back when R. W. Morgan was caught behind off the first delivery bowled on Friday and six runs later J. T. Sparling was well caught at slip by Ibadulla off the bowling of Cameron to make the Auckland score 30 for three. R. M. Harris played the bowling carefully and with R. Morrison took the total to 64 before he was bowled off his pads for 22 by Ibadulla. Ten runs later, A. R. Morrison, who had looked ready to take the intlative at any stage and had cracked a 6 and three 4’s In his Innings of 20, was caught on the square leg boundary off the bowling of J. C. Alabaster. From then on Auckland struggled to get back into the game, while Cameron and Ibadulla maintained an accurate attack.

Auckland went to lunch with Harford and T. W. Jarvis batting

and 123 for five wickets. They looked as if they would save the day for Auckland but Cameron had Jarvis leg before for 11 soon after resumption and the score was 124 for six. Harford was next to go, caught at mid-wicket off Ibadulla’s bowling. He was in command up to this stage, stroking the loose delivery powerfully and scoring well in front of the wicket. His 50 came up in 91 minutes and included six boundaries. The remaining batsmen offered some resistance but produced few runs and the innings closed for 157. Camedon took four for 35 off 25.1 overs and Ibadulla three for 22 off 21 overs. When Otago batted again both R. E. Sutton and R. E. Cunis sent down some fiery, shortpitched deliveries to Ibadulla and G. D. Beer. In attempting to hook a Sutton bouncer, Beer suffered a fracture of a small bone in his skull when the bail ricocheted off his bat to his head and he retired. In the same over Sutton had P. C. Semple caught at slip before he had scored but that was Auckland's last success of the match. OTAGO First Innings .. .. 216 Second Innings K. Ibadulla, not out .. 10 G. D. Beer, retired hurt .. 6 P.
