Gained Trophy In Race Against Clock

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. Canterbury scored 211 runs in 132 minutes to snatch the Brabin Cup (national under-21 cricket tournament) from Auckland at Eden Park on Saturday.

Resuming its first innings lat 90 for one on Saturday I morning. Canterbury was all out for 142, the Auckland i spinners R. C. Hooton and J. R. Syme, being in complete command. But when G. E. Vivian declared Auckland’s second innings closed at 143 for six, leaving Canterbury to score 211 runs for victory in 150 minutes it was a different matter. R. M. tiful sixes. The opener, G. L. Bull (41), joined in the fun, and finally C. L. Broad (61) chanced his arm with such stunning effect that Canterbury achieved its target with 18 minutes and two wickets to spare.

Otago's stubborn batting denied Wellington an outright win, but Wellington gained sufficient points to finish second in the tournament.

Points were: Canterbury 16, Wellington 13, Auckland 11. Otago 3.

B. Freeman (Otago) won a bat for the highest batting aggregate (199 runs) and C. L. Broad (Canterbury) took the bowling honours (17 wickets). After the tournament the following team was chosen to play Nelson in a two-day match, beginning today at Nelson: —G. E. Vivian (captain), R. C. Hooton, J. R. Syme (Auckland), C. L. Bull. R. M. Hounsell 5/52, C. L. Broad 3/57) and 143/ 6 dec. (J. Kasper 63: Broad 6/62), Canterbury 142 (R. Bromlev 63; J. Syme 6/34) and 212/8 (Broad 61, R. Gearry 44 ).
