BID TO SAVE CIRCUS
Bertram Mills Bought Out (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copgright) LONDON, January 2. Mr Max Joseph, a millionaire hotel and property owner, has bought control of the famous Bertram Mills Circus. His total outlay in his bid to keep the “big top” alive is £210,000. The circus, started by the animal trainer Bertram Mills 45 years ago was due to close next month. The Royal Family, led by the Queen, paid a farewell visit last week. The announcement of its impending closure came as the circus entered the last weeks of its traditional Christmas season at Olympia, the exhibition hall in West London. The Mills Brothers sold off all their own animals last year wtien they took their travelling big top off the roads and decided to stage just one London show a year. Mr Joseph has not revealed his plans beyond saying that he “hoped it would be possible to continue circus presentation.”
