Former President Of France Dead
(N.Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright) PARIS, January 2. Vincent Auriol, President of France from 1947 to 1954 and the first Socialist to hold office, died yesterday, aged 81.
He will be buried without ceremony. Friends of the family said there would be no wreaths or flowers and no graveside speeches at the funeral tomorrow. Only members of the family would be present.
Mr Auriol died three weeks after he was brought to Pans on a stretcher in President de Gaulle’s Caravelle jet aircraft from his Riviera villa at Hyeres. He fractured a thighbone in a fall on November 21.
As President during the turbulent Fourth Republic, Mr Auriol saw 15 Governments come and go during his seven years in office. Tributes to him included a statement by a former Prime Minister, Mr Antoine Pinay, who said: “France has lost a great patriot and his friends a man of great heart.” A fellow - Socialist and former Premier, Mr Guy Mollett, said: “Historians will say that Vincent Auriol counts among the first of the men
who, in the wake of the last war, did all they could for the rebirth of France from its ruins and for French democracy to restore itself.”
