PRISONER CAUGHT
Arrest Aboard Hinemoa
Kevin Laurence Weaver, who escaped from Paparua Prison on Wednesday about 1.15 p.m., was recaptured by Christchurch detectives last evening on board the interisland steamer express Hinemoa at Lyttelton. Weaver, who had no passenger’s ticket, was arrested by Detective-Sergeant B. I. Murray after a short chase on B deck amidship.
Road blocks were withdrawn yesterday morning and Christchurch detectives took over the search from uniformed police and prison officers. Yesterday afternoon a man telephoned the Christchurch Central Police Station and said he had information about Weaver.
Deteceive-Sergeants Murray and D. Porteous, Detectives D. N. Scott, M. Ealam, W. Porter. D. Withers, and B. Simon, of Christchurch, and Detective A. Pazell and Constable N. North, of Lyttelton, then made inquiries in Lyttelton. The party boarded the Hinemoa in the early evening and searched the ship from stem to stern. At 7.40 p.m., Weaver was seen on B deck and after a short chase was captured. He offered no resistance. He will appear in the Magistrate’s Court in Christchurch today.
