"SHE" SAYS...

... in a letter which appeared recently in a British magazine, the chairman of the British Women Racng Drivers’ Club (Mary L. Wheeler) said: “At last it is being acknowledged that the basic cause of nearly all accidents is bad driving or ignorant driving.” The letter commented on the need for better instruction in driving techniques and for higher standards among instructors.

Young women learning to drive should begin instruction at a driving school rather than have a husband or boy friend assume the task.

Both the car and the friendship suffered when L at the age of 21, was being taught to drive by a male friend. A woman with a friend or husband is likely to be suspicious of comments or criticism, more argumentative and quick-tempered. She is more likely to accept advice from a stranger than from a friend. Husbands will agree with me, I am sure.

How much more joyously she will describe the lesson to her friends, and how much more happily the comments will be received by the man in her life when he knows that it is not his car that is in danger of disaster! The greatest problem when learning to drive is to control the car with so many levers and pedals. The vehicle seems to take control, with violent lurchings, stalling and drunken meanderings! Learning takes time.

Habits formed when driving under expert instruction are valuable, and can also be a worth while example to friends.
