Canterbury Has One Defeat

"The Prest" Special Servict

AUCKLAND.

Auckland has established itself firm favourite and Hawke’s Bay had another upset win during the second day of the national women’s I softball competition for the Bensel Cup at 1 Auckland yesterday.

Auckland beat Hawke's Bay, 3-1, in the morning, and then thrashed Otago, 13-1, to remain the only unbeaten team.

Hawke’s Bay, Canterbury and Waikato each have had one loss. Manawatu, Otago and Wellington have one win, while Hutt Valley has yet to win a game. Canterbury, fielding in better fashion, backed up the steady pitching of B. Makinson to beat Hutt Valley, 10-0. Canterbury took a while to master the slow pitching of Hutt Valley’s J. Bill, and only two runs were scored in the first four innings. However, hits by N. Beale, K. McCormick, L. Leask and J. Moher brought four runs, and when Canterbury added two more from a hard drive by J. Moher the game was stopped in the sixth when it had gained a 10-run lead. Makinson gained four strikeouts.

In the afternoon Canterbury lost to Hawke’s Bay, 5-2. Both teams made three hits but

| Canterbury’s weak fielding and two good hits by A. Campagnoto and D. Mason gave Hawke's Bay four runs. Hawke’s Bay scored again in its second innings when E. Bowles scored on errors.
