Royal Bid’s All-The-Way Dunedin Win

“The Press” Special Service

DUNEDIN.

Royal Bid had a deserved success in the £2OOO Dunedin Gold Gup after being left in front from the start. He had only a long neck to spare from Cassarook, which lost his position, but came home brilliantly.

The race was run at a snail’s pace in the early stages and the time of 2.40:2-5 was the slowest on record since Silver Pal’s cup in 1945.

The cup was the first leg of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double, which was rounded off by the favourite, Warfare, in the Publicans’ Handicap and the combination paid £l6 8s 6d for £l. Royal Bid’s win was his third in his last five starts. Trained at Riccarton by V. D. Clutterbuck for Mr L. B. McKenzie, the Howe six-year-old was ridden by his regular rider, F. H. Skelton. The reluctance on the part of the other riders left Skelton no option but to make the pace, but he put it to good advantage having enough in hand on straightening up for the run home to hold off the opposition. The favourite. Palisade, had every chance, but showed no dash over the concluding stages to finish fifth and it was a distant fifth. Court Belle was never near the leaders and battled on for fourth.

Warfare justified her favouritism in the Publicans’ Handicap when she held off the brilliantly-finishing Riccarton candidate, Hushaway, by a neck, with half a head to the lightly-supported Captain's Command.

Warfare had a good run behind the leaders, whereas Hushaway, along with Sir Athol, was last away and was still giving the leaders a good start into the straight. Results:
