The jet-propelled bullet is close at hand, predicts the monthly journal of the American Legion. The bullet would move to its target under its own power after leaving the gun.
“A new secret propellant, similar to gun cotton, is contained in the base of the bullet itself,” said the journal. “This is now possible because of the unusual nature of the new propellant. It is more powerful than smokeless powder, is just as safe and stable, and it can be varied chemically to produce varying velocities.” The propellant burns for about a tenth of a second in flight, by which time the bullet is travelling at about 1250 ft a second, the journal said.
The self-propelled bullets and the rifles from which they are fired will be put on the market soon once a few remaining difficulties have been overcome.
