NATIONAL BOWLING

37 Survive Second-day Singles Play

So many lives were lost on the Christchurch greens yesterday that it seemed like a miniature retreat from Moscow.

The 411 survivors of the first day’s play in the national singles bowling championships were reduced to 37; four of them holding two lives.

The two-lifers—A. Swanson (Kew), D. McKenzie (Milton), R. E. Dunne (Otago) and D. Carter (Stoke) — all are from the South Island, bu* North Island players are prominent among the 33 one-lifers. A former Riccarton policeman, T. W. Round (Mona Vale, Christchurch) provided the sensation of the morning play when he beat the reigning champion, M. R. Buchan (Tui Park, Waikato) 23-16. Buchan, the master of the drawing game, was completely outplayed by Round. However, Buchan clung grimly to his one life and beat C. McGarry (Carlton) in a classic match in the afternoon. Bowlers again were tested by the vagaries of the weather. A sudden hail storm at mid-day stopped play at the Opawa green, which was coated with hail stones. Two men, unperturbed by the hail, continued playing, but when one saw his ball stutter to a halt after rolling about 20 feet he, too, moved quickly to shelter. The sudden gusts of wind influenced most players, who spent more time studying the wind that the greens, which, in spite of the odd shower, played well. Amid the general carnage it was only to be expected that many prominent players would be dispatched from the field. A. Connew (Carlton) lost consecutive games in the morning. J. H. Rabone (Auckland) had scratchy win over L. A. Harris (South Brighton) and was then beaten by W. Cousins (Taieri) on the last head. Rabone survived another close game, but finally was beaten by L. P. Crust (Manley), one of the four Australians in the field. W. Hampton (Naenae) and W. O’Neill (Carlton) also disappeared quickly. Carter Wins Cousins, however did not repeat his determined play against Rabone when he played another two-lifer, Carter. At one stage Cousins led, 16-1, and the spectators began to dwindle, but Carter recovered magnificently to level the scores 20-20 on the last head and then took the shot to win 21-20 on the last end. The winner of the pairs championship in 1962, R. L. McDonald, moved out of the field quickly when he lost his life to J. E. Gordon (Taeri) in the first game in the morning. The Buchan-McGarry game produced some splendid bowls. On every head there seemed to be a cluster of bowls surrounding the kitty. McGarry took an early lead and seemed to be assured of a win when his finer drawing took him to' a 17-11 lead on the sixteenth end. Buchan, a tall, spare figure, then noticed that there were only 15 minutes left for the last five ends. “I’ll have to start now or it will be too late,” he said. And he did start. He gained three points on the seventeenth head produced a tension that kept the large crowd quiet. McGarry put his third bowl inside Buchan’s, who until then had two shots. Buchan studied the green, and produced the perfect shot which knocked McGarry’s “shot” bowl away and gave him three to score. McGarry’s next bowl was short and Buchan had a narrow lead, 18-17. On the last end Buchan nestled against the kitty with his last bowl. McGarry tried to draw, but was short and Buchan proved again that he is a worthy champion. On the next green Round played another former singles champion, P. C. Skoglund. Round drew beautifully and acknowledged the applause of the crowd as he contained Skoglund, but towards the end of the match Round became tired and Skoglund won easily. Skoglund lost his life in the morning to McKenzie; a player who, while not possessing the flamboyance of others, quietly and steadily went on his winning way with skilful drawing and intelligent appreciation of shots. At the Opawa green there was an early surprise when A. Govorko (Te Puke) was demolished, 21-8, in his first game by R. Todd (Marlborough). Govorko kept his one life by winning his next matches by decisive margins. But it was not until he had won his next game that the usual happy smile appeared and the cigars were smoked with a flourish rather than chewed. E. Bell (Burnside), who has been playing for only two years, beat the experienced J. Dale (Burwood) in his first game, but lost one life to L. P. Burgess (Hutt) in a game notable for the delicate drawing of the players. WOOLSTON GREEN Fourth Round.—One-lifers: T. N. Vaughan (Gisborne) 25, N. Clayworth (Carlton) 14; W.
