Buller Cricket Reps. Beaten At Ashburton

Ashburton had its first outright win of the season when it beat Buller by an innings and 41 runs at the Oval in Ashburton yesterday.

Resuming with none down for 47, Buller appeared to be in control of the steady Ashburton attack, the opening pair, McGrath and Byrne, putting on 87 runs for the first wicket.

However, after this excellent start, the subsequent batsmen were not able to consolidate the position, and five wickets were down for the addition of only 41 runs After the fall of the fifth wicket, Ashburton took control of the game and took the last five wickets for only 21 runs, the last four wickets falling without addition to the score.

The spearhead of the Ashburton attack was the slow left-ann bowler, A. Tuite, who took five wickets for 52 runs, and st the conclusion of the Buller innings was sitting on a “hat trick.” B. Hawkins, the Ashburton opening bowler, who was also sitting on a “hat-trick” at the conclusion of Buller’s first innings, bowled well in spasms but at times was very erratic Buller, forced to follow-on |in its second innings, struck I trouble early, when Hawkins had McGrath and Byrne dismissed with the score at 10.

Once again, Buller struck trouble after the fall of the first wicket and at one stage, the team was six wickets down for 32 runs.

The Buller captain, G. Wood, was the only batsman in the second innings to show any opposition to the diverse Ashburton attack. He scored 16 runs. The bowling honours in Buller’s second innings were even, with Tuite and B. Farrant taking three wickets, and Hawkins and B. White taking two.

D. Isherwood, who stood in as wicket-keeper for Ashburton had a good match, making four dismissals in the first innings, including a stumping off the pace bowler Hawkins, and two in the second innings The umpires were W. Gibbs and G. McCormick. Detailed scoreboard of the day’s play is as follows: ASHBURTON
