Damaged Trawler Beached By Crew

(New Zealand Press Association)

INVERCARGILL, Dec. 28.

Holed and without steerage, the Bluffbased fishing boat Southland is beached at the entrance to Preservation Inlet in Fiordland.

The vessel, which left Bluff on December 20 on crayfishing operations, is safe, although some water is being taken at high tide. The boat was damaged in high seas. The hull was holed in three places and the propeller shaft rudder and keel were also damaged. The Southland was beached on Monday in- Otago’s Retreat, a channel in Preservation Inlet, near Pig Island. Because of poor conditions, radio-telephone communication with the vessel has been impossible, but it has been established that the crew of three are safe. The Southland’s owner, Mr E. R. Edsall, of Port Chalmers, said today that he would

fly into the inlet with an insurance assessor when the weather improved. Puysegur Point lighthouse, at the head of the inlet, today reported gusts reaching 56 m.p.h. at 3 a.m.
