PINES BEACH GALA

Miss Fern Willman, of Christchurch, was yesterday judged “Miss Pegasus Bay" at a gala organised by the Pines Beach Association. She will go forward to compete for the title of Miss New Zealand Resorts, in a contest sponsored by Besley Homes. Ltd., for the Mount Maunganui 5000 Club, to be held at Mt. Maunganui. Miss Willman, aged 17, undertakes freelance modelling during the day and works in the advertising department of “The Press” in the evening. She has competed previously at several contests without success. Earlier in the afternoon, the “Miss Pines Beach” con test attracted 10 entries. Miss Willman, whose statistics are 35-23-35, received the winning sash and a substantial cash price, and Miss Dorothy Harris, of Christchurch, the second cash prize.

The other contestant for “Miss Pegasus Bay” was Miss Ruby Foley, of Christchurch, who earlier in the day had won the “Miss Leithfield Beach” contest.

Miss Foley holds the “Miss Canterbury 1965” title, and was third in the “Miss New Zealand” contest in June.

A baby show was the other major attraction at the gala. Nineteen babies were entered in the under six months section and 43 in the six to 12 months, both of which were judged by Mesdames J. Rennie and M. Kemp. In the younger group. Rebecca, daughter of Mrs T. B. Ryan, of Christchurch, was placed first, and Leann, daughter of Mrs L. Harris, of Christchurch, second. In the older group, Tracy Anne, daughter of Mrs B. Mackenzie, of Pines Beach, was first and Deborah, daughter of Mrs J. Browne, of Christchurch, second. The gala attracted a very large crowd and sideshows and stalls were well patronised. A train and a merry-go-round proved very popular with the children. The association plans to use the resultant finances to alter and modernise the Pines Beach hall. The final figure will not be known for some time as the association, together with the Pegasus Surf and Lifesaving Club, is organising dances during the next fortnight.
