BAD WEATHER

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 27. Cold, showery weather with strong south-easterly winds buffeted most of New Zealand today and there was even hail and snow in some places. But the weather was fine in Wellington, eastern Wairarapa, inland Kaikoura and North Canterbury.

The highest temperature recorded was at Onerahi, Northland, which managed a mild 66 degrees.

Most of the country

will have rain tomorrow and strong winds are forecast to come from the south-west. Hawke’s Bay was swept by gales this afternoon, gusts reaching 60 miles an hour.

Snow fell in high country and there were heavy hail showers in and around Dannevirke from 10 a.m.

Cross-winds closed Wellington airport today to DC3 aircraft. Paraparaumu airport was used instead until Wellington reopened at 2.30 p.m.
