SMALL SEED PRICES
Lower Figure Expected Small seed prices to farmers will open at a much lower figure than was the case 12 months ago, according to grain and seed merchants in Christchurch.
This has been brought about by prospects of heavy harvests of both ryegrass and clover in Canterbury. One merchant yesterday described the ryegrass crops as “tremendous.”
December is probably the quietest time in the trade. Firms have not been buying from farmers for at least two - months, and there is no demand from overseas because it is mid-winter in Europe and the United Kingdom. Local trading is expected to brighten by February, when the first of the overseas inquiries are likely to be received. The president of the GrainSeed and Produce Merchants’ Association (Mr J. R. E. Hughes) said that United Kingdom buyers knew of the good harvest prospects here and were waiting until the start of the New Zealand harvest.
Because actual trading is at present non-existent, Mr Hughes said a range of prices paid by merchants to growers could be misleading. Early last autumn perennial ryegrass mother seed was quoted at 15s a bushel, HI mother at 21s, Italian mother at 21s and white clover mother seed at 3s Id a lb. This was for seed of 99/90 purity and germination.
