NEW LICENCES FOR WAIKATO DISTRICT

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 22. Six new tavern licences and two new hotel licences have been granted in Waikato by the Licensing Control Commission. The decisions come after an extensive review, of licences in Waikato. Three of the new tavern licences and one of the hotel licences are in Hamilton suburbs. The other tavern licences are at Te Kauwhata, Maramarua and Tahuna, and Waihi Beach was given an hotel licence. Four requests for new licences were refused. In a review of provisional licences the commission confirmed three, deferred decision on three and agreed to confirm 39 provisional licences when work was carried out The commission said it had found the pattern of hotel service in Hamilton, the main centre of Waikato, the most puzzling in New Zealand. “Hamilton gets along with fewer hotels and hotel rooms than cities of half the size,” it said, “It seems that retail sales per capita are lower in Hamilton and wholesale sales are higher. At least one possible deduction is that with insufficient drinking outlets and inadequate bar space, as is the case in this city, a

higher level of liquor is taken in homes and greater use is made of clubs.” The commission said more drinking outlets removed from the centre of Hamilton were needed. It is to issue new tavern licences for the suburbs of Drinsdale, North Fairfield and Hillcrest and a new hotel licence at Melville. “In our opinion it is unreasonable to expect people to travel long distances to licensed premises when they could be much closer to their work and their homes,” the commission said in agreeing to issue a tavern licence at Maramarua. Requests for a wholesale licence for Hamilton and for new licences for Cambridge, Matamata and Tokoroa were declined. Walmairl Beach. Stroke Senior: W. Pltcaithly. 83, 12—71R.
