Higher Duties On Australian Timber
(New Zealand Press Association’
WELLINGTON, Dec. 22.
Duties on dressed timber of Australian origin will be increased from January 1 in keeping with terms of the New Zealand-Australia Free Trade Agreement.
The duties will be increased from 7s 6d to 16s lid a 100 super feet. The Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton) said that in an exchange of letters attached to the agreement provision was made for the phasing out of import duties on certain timber products so that the duties in each country’s tariff were equal at each stage of the transitional period. The object of this was to
give industries in each country equal trading opportunities during the transitional period. The Minister said that duties on dressed timbers from other sources were not affected, and that the new rates would be phased out in biennial reductions, so that at each step of the transitional period, they would be at the same level as the Australian tariff.
