Over United States opposition, the General Assembly today condemned Portuguese colonial policy and urged all United Nations members to break diplomatic relations and boycott trade with Portugal, the Associated Press reported. The Assembly's resolution in particular asked military allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation to stop giving Portugal “any assistance which would enable it to continue its repression of the African people” in Angola. Mozambique and Portuguese Guinea. In a reference to sanctions binding upon the member countries, the resolution asked the Security Council “to consider putting into effect against Portugal the appropriate measure laid down in the (United Nations) Charter.” The resolution was approved. 66-26. with 15 abstentions.
