VISIT BY POLLUTION ADVISORY COUNCIL

The Pollution Advisory Council will visit the Christchurch area at the end of March as part of a study of water pollution in the South Island.

This information was given to the Kaiapoi Borough Council on Thursday night in a letter from the advisory council. The letter said that the problem in the Christchurch area was an extremely complex one. The council was uncertain as to the best way to proceed, but would examine the whole position during its tour. Mr C. A. Cowie, of the .Ministry of Works public health engineering section, who was 'technical adviser to the coun-

cil would make preliminary investigations in the area early in January. The letter was in reply to a complaint about pollution of the south branch by effluent from the North Canterbury Freezing Company’s Works. The company, in a letter to the borough council, said that it had ordered material to build a sedimentation tank that would handle all works effluent Plans to have an earth holding area had been abandoned. “I am glad the company is giving this work priority. We don't want to see the river turned into something like the lower Heathcote,” said Cr. R. L. Wylie.
