RACING Stablemates Sprint Smartly In Training

The stablemates, Shipmate and Hushaway, showed a high standard of fitness for their engagements at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting by sprinting attractively in training at Riccarton yesterday.

The emphasis was on sound, rather than brilliant, gallops by horses being prepared for holiday racing. AU of the fast work was held 35 feet out on the course proper which provided good footing but had the sting out of it after heavy week-end rain. Shipmate (A. J. Stokes) and Hushaway (B. D. Collins) were paired for five furlongs. They ran home together in lmin 3 4-ssec, came the last half-mile in 50 l-ssec and the final three furlongs in 37 4-ssec. Shipmate’s holiday racing will start in the Flying Handicap on the first day at Wingatui. Hushaway is an acceptor for the James Hazlett Gold Cup but his programme is still uncertain. More , than likely he will be reserved to run against the open sprinters on the second day of the meeting. Royal Bid (F. H. Skelton) continued his preparation for the Dunedin Cup with a sound mile gallop in company with Genera] Gilbert (D. N. Hadfield). They ran as one all the way, took lmin 49 3-ssec for the distance, came the last half-mile in 53sec and the final three furlongs in 40sec. General Gilbert, whose main mission during the holi-

days will be the Waikouaiti Cup, will start his campaign in the open sprint on the second day at Washdyke. Marlborough, a Timaru Cup light-weight, worked evenly over nine furlongs in lmin 58 4-ssec. He was joined for the last five furlongs by his two-year-old stablemate Blue Chip. They came home together from there in lmin 5 l-ssec, the last half-mile in 53 2-ssec. Marlborough had his cup rider, A Telfer, up. Won Last Year Pango (R. K. Moir) dashed home from the half-mile in 50 3-ssec and came her last three furlongs in 38sec. She will be trying to keep a winning record intact in the Juvenile Handicap on the first day at Washdyke. Standout (A J. Stokes) was shading Marlow (P. J. Daly) after running the last seven furlongs of a mile in lmin 33 4-ssee, the final half-mile in 53 2-ssec. The Dunedin Cup will be Standout’s next race. Marlow is being prepared for the Timaru Cup, a race he won 12 months ago. We’ll Find Out (W. Jackson) led Sir Limond (R. L. Browning) by a neck at the end of six furlongs in lmin 18 4-ssec, the last half-mile in 52 2-ssec. We’ll Find Out bad much the best of the weights. Filspar (E. G. Low) was a length in advance of Town Talk (A J. Stokes) after seven furlongs in lmin 34 4-5 sec, the final half-mile in 54sec. They will be rivals In the Levels Hack Handicap at Washdyke.

Ibn (F. H. Skelton) and Blue Seas (C. T. Wilson) dashed home from the halfmile together in 51 2-ssec. It was a smart effort for maidens. Sagina (P. Murther) and His Command (C. M. Williams) completed a similar task in 52 2-ssec.

Wtotohi (C. M. Williams) and Gilpey (B. D. Collins) took 53 3-ssec to run the last four furlongs of five. Golden Vanity (N.' T. Cowies) was lei off with an

easy mile. She took lmin 48sec but quickened to run the last half in 52sec. Barcape, which was tried in a hood, tore away from Aoudo (F. H. Skelton) in the early stages of their five furlong gallop but after running his first furlong in 12sec and his first two in 23 4-ssec Barcape shortened stride quickly and Aoudo ran past him easily in the run in and won by two lengths. The time for the distance was lmin 4 2-ssec.

Newbrook (C. T. Wilson) ran the last four of six furlongs in 52sec. He could make a worth-while showing in the open sprint on the first day at Washdyke. Worked Keenly Summer Lad (E. G. Low) and Cumberland (G. W. Mein) worked keenly throughout seven furlongs. They ran the distance in lmin 30sec and came home from the halfmile in 51 2-ssec. Paris Match (N. T. Cowles) ran in from the six furlongs in lmin 18 4-ssec and ran her last half-mile in 53 2-ssec. Oh Sally (E. G. Low) took 53 Msec to run her half-mile and came home from the three furlongs in 41 l-ssec. She could have done better. Status Symbol (D. N. Hadfield) and Sabell (J. Kerkvliet) were abreast after running the last four of five furlongs in 51 2-ssec, the final three furlongs in 38 4-ssec. They will be rivals in the open sprint on the first day at Washdyke. They came from the half-mile in 52 3-ssec and from the three furlongs in 40 l-ssec. Ya Kwanza worked freely in the easier ground. Fine In Foal You Tue (A. R. Swanson) and Fine (J. A. Messent) ran in from the half-mile together in 51 3-ssec. Fine, which was mated with Mystery this season, will make a fresh start in the Temuka Stakes at Washdyke. You Tue is an acceptor for the same race but she has the eighth right of re-entry so her chances of getting a start do not look bright Charlborough (E. G. Low) was given strong work over ground. He was never much above three-quarter pace. His last half-mile took 54sec and his final three furlongs 40 Mondy (G. W. Mein) and Hamadan (B. Stechmann) ran five furlongs together in lmin 6sec. Their last half-mile took 53sec and the final three furlongs 40 2-ssec. Gold Shower (F. H. Skelton) and May Wyne (D. N. Hadfield) ran right away from Prospero (G. W. Mein) in the last two furlongs of seven. Gold Shower, after recording lmin 31 Msec. the final halfmile in 52 l-ssec and the last three furlongs in 39 3-ssec, led Wyne by a neck and Prospero by the best part of six lengths. Stageland (A.
