£90,108 In Lottery Grants

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 21. Grants totalling £90,108 from Golden Kiwi lottery profits were announced today by the chairman of the lottery distribution committee for scientific research (Mr B. R. Law). The largest £18,698 will go to Professor D. A. Titchen, of Massey University, for the purchase of advanced physiological recording and analysing equipment. Professor A. G. McLellan, of the University of Canterbury, will receive £15.850 for an arc-imaging, crystal-grow-ing furnace. The sum of £15,000 will go

to the New Zealand Oceanographic Institute, D.5.1.R., to purchase back numbers of scientific journals and expedition reports. Dr. D. A. Christoffel. of the Victoria University of Wellington, will get £13,410 for a study of volcanic regions in t he centre of the North Island by geological and geophysical means to provide information on the understanding and prei diction of eruptions. Professor D. J. Hooton, of the University of Auckland, will get £lO,OOO to supplement a grant of £20,000 in 1964 for the aquisitinn of a magnetic spectrograph for nuclear physics research. The Royal Society of New Zealand will receive a fur-

ther grant of £6OOO for binding scientific publications in the society's library. Dr. A. D. Thomson, of the plant disease division of the D.S.I.R. wWi get £6150 for the purchase of an analytical Ultra centrifuge. This will be used initially for studies of plant viruses, bacterial cell wells, leukemia and for clinical studies. A grant of £3OOO has also been made by the distribution committee for medical research. AppUcatioas for grants totalling £815,871 were considered by the distribution committee at a recent meeting. Mr Law said applications amounting to £300,478 were deferred until the next meeting.
