Narrowing Gap Of Rich From Poor
•(N.Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, Dec. 21. The General Assembly yesterday approved an international effort aimed at narrowing the gap between rich and poor nations.
As the spearhead of its campaign it adopted a plan to establish a new United Nations agency to promote industrial development in the developing nations. The agency will be known as the United Nations Organisation for Industrial Development Its operations will be financed by voluntary contributions from member States, the United Nations specialised agencies, and the International Atomic Energy Agency. Feeding The Hungry It will incorporate an industrial development board with a secretariat headed by an executive director to be appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General. U Thant The Genera! Assembly also adopted with large majorities
two resolutions on stepping up action to feed the world's hungry. One resolution calls for the continuation of the United Nations world food programme for as long as multilateral food aid is found feasible and desirable, subject to review before each pledging conference. A target of 275 million dollars for voluntary contributions was set for the three years 196648, of which at least 33 per cent would be in cash and services. The second resolution asked the Secretary-Genera), together with heads of United Nations specialised agencies, to examine means and policies for large-scale international action to combat hunger effectively.
