RETURN TO CRETE

N.Z. Soldiers’ Party Memories of the war in the Middle East will be revived next year for members of the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force, says the "R.S.A. Review.” A party of 80 former soldiers and wives will make a four-month world tour,, a highlight of which will be the twenty-fifth anniversary celebrations of the battles of Crete, Greece, and Libya, in Crete. Other highlights will be a reunion with remnants of the Greek Brigade attached to the New Zealand Division in Greece, a visit to the Cretan memorial at Ayia, and the placing of wreaths in the cemetery at Suda Bay, where it is also intended to plant a pohutakawa tree from Whakatane.

The party will attend a function in Rome with members of Italian returned services* organisations, and a reunion in Munich with members of the Afrika Korps. A reunion will also be held with German paratroopers who fought against the New Zealanders In Crete. A month will be spent in Britain. The idea of the trip arose at the national reunion of- the New Zealand Crete Veterans’ Association in New Plymouth. It is being organised by Mr E. W. Rogers, of Whakatane, who visited Crete with his wife in 1963. The party will leave Wellington on April 10.
