USE OF N.Z. TOBACCO
Objection To Cuts (N.Z. Prest Association) NELSON, Dec. 21. Wakefield tobacco growers want the Government to increase to 65 per cent, by statute, the amount of New Zea-land-grown tobacco which must be used by tobacco manufacturers. A meeting last evening, which considered the manufacturers’ recently-announced cuts, heard the chairman of the Tobacco Growers' Federation (Mr W. J. Eginton) outline the action taken by the federation’s executive and the growers’ representatives on the Tobacco Board.
The present statutory requirement is for 30 per cent of New Zealand-grown leaf. At present, manufacturers are voluntarily using 53 per cent.
Wakefield growers believe they will be more seriously affected by the cuts than growers elsewhere. Some feel that only the Government can help them. They want to see a restriction on the amount of tobacco Imported into New Zealand with greater use of locally-grown leaf.
