Commander Dies
(N.Z. Preet Assn.—Coppripht) NICOSIA, Dec. 19. General Kodendera Thimayya, of India, the commander of United Nations forces in Cyprus, died yesterday. He was 60. General Thimayya suffered a heart attack and collapsed while taking a bath. He was rushed to hospital, but was dead on arrival. A distinguished combat commander during the Second World War. General Thimayya handled many delicate tasks for the United Nations during peace-keeping operations. Among the most difficult was his assignment as chairman in 1953 of the neutrals nations’ Repatriation Commission In Korea. He was the first Indian officer to command a brigade under the British and fought the Japanese tn Burma.
