CRICKET YOUTH

The Burnside A. player Warwick Beetson is a bowler who could show quick improvement when games recommence after Christmas. Warwick is a lively medium pacer with a natural action which allows the ball to cut back from off.

Graham Lynch is a player who combines aggression with sound defence in his battery. A West-University A. team member, Graham is particularly fond of the pull shot and the cover drive, both of which he plays extremely well.

Paul Hammond distinguished himself by some bold and resolute hitting when he took the long handle to some fast bowling while batting for Old Collegians against Sydenham on Saturday. With an improvement in his front foot shots, the Sydenham A. player. Bill Nicholson could score many more runs than he does. At the moment Bill scores freely off the back foot but is susceptible to a ball which is well pitched up.

With more and more boys playing Saturday morning cricket, it is becoming Increasingly difficult to obtain enough men to control the games. However those who do regularly give up their Saturday mornings to lend a hand are doing an excellent job on making the competition the success It is.

Last Saturday a fine example of good sportsmanship was given by the Old Collegians A. player, James Angus. James snicked a ball which was caught by the wicketkeeper. An appeal was made and It was apparent that the umpire was going to give the decision in the batsman’s favour. So James immediately “walked.” It was good Jo see such sportsmanlike action being taken by a Player of his years. R. Pitama gave a display of enthusiastic batting and lively concentration in backing up for Sydenham on Saturday.

With pre-Christmas games now completed it would be fair to uy that in most team's fielding has improved immensely. This improvement is especially noticeable in ground work, but unfortunately far too many catches are still being dropped.
