HISTORY IN THE MAKING
Skilled hands at work on 243 feet of British history at London’s Royal School of Needlework. The finished tapestry will be one of the main attractions at Hastings next year, when the Sussex town celebrates the 900th anniversary of William the Conqueror’s victory in 1066.
The embroidery will cost more than £6OOO. It will comprise 81 pictures, showing important events in British history from the Norman conquest to the present The first panel shows the Battle of Hastings. The colourful panels do not claim to be historically accurate in every detail, but aim to be symbolic representations of the events. The subjects already covered by the needlewomen include William’s coronation, the Doomsday Book, the death of William Rufus in the New Forest the murder of Thomas a’Becket Richard I and the Crusades, Robin Hood, Magna Carta, the first Parliament the principality of Wales.
When the embroidery is complete, it will be on view at Hastings from the end of May to the end of October. A triodome—« domed and circular exhibition hall of aluminium alloy—4s being specially built on the promenade extension to house the embroidery so the public will be able to sqp it to best advantage.
