Fish Merchant To Import Trawler

AUCKLAND, Dec. 21. Sanford, Ltd., an Auckland fish merchant, has been granted an import licence for an overseas purse-seiner-trawler, the chairman, Mr F. G. Baskett, told the firm's annual meeting today.
The licence had been obtained after 18 months' negotiation with the Government, he said. A full-scale seining operation will soon be carried out from Tauranga and Auckland. Onee the pattern of supply, variety and regularity of fishing was established, further vessels and shore facilities would be introduced. A fishmeal plant and much larger processing and freezing facilities would be installed at Tauranga subject to the company’s experience in purse-
seining, he said. Several new vessels, for both trawling and pelagic fishing, were planned, as well as factory and other extensions in several subsidiaries, Mr Baskett said. - The new fishmeal plant, which would be capable of handling increased dally supplies from Sanford's factory
and other Auckland factories, / should be installed in Auckland late next year or early in 1967. A separate company,- which will work from the main Auckland factory, had been fonned with Harry Beck and Company, Ltd., of Australia, said Mr Baskett. This company would produce fish paste for the New Zealand and, subject to cost, overseas markets. The use of the brand name, formulas, technical- supervision and advice and Several essential items of machinery had been provided without charge. Two new trawlers were nearing completion at Auckland.
