The Road Toll
Sir,—There has been much emotional and slightly hysterical advertising in the press recently on the subject of the road toll. In my opinion, this will do more harm than good, as it will unnerve many drivers. If the Minister wishes to cut the toll he should start by inaugurating driving schools, Governmentoperated, where real driving -for example, skid control and highspeed driving—could be taught This would enable the candidate to handle any situation which might occur at high speed. The speed limit on the open road should be removed. A recent survey on the Ml, Britain’s unlim-ited-speed motorway, showed that the average speed of all traffic was 51 m.p.h, although speeds of 130 m.p.h. were recorded. This shows that traffic will find its own speed. —Yours, etc., „ M. B. REID. December 15, 1965.
