MISSION TO LEPERS
Income High But Below Target Giving to the Mission to Lepers New Zealand this year reached £105,500 The Rev. M. H. Feist, the mission’s secretary for New Zealand. said in Auckland that this figure had been exceeded only once—last year—when two donations totalling £lO,OOO had been received. These were special gifts in lieu of legacies, made in the donors' lifetimes, as the mission is exempt from gift duty. Legacies this year amounted to £54,500, more than twice the previous highest total. Thus the mission’s income from all sources was £lOO,OOO. This was the highest figure to date, but did not reach the target the mission’s council had set for itself—£l6s,ooo. This figure was accepted during the year when it became known that payments could be expected from several estates which were then being wound up. “Though general donations were down a bit," said Mr Feist, “all concerned with the Mission to Lepers are tremendously grateful to the people of New Zealand for their continued and generous support, especially because our opportunities are increasing so excitingly, new areas are being opened to our doctors, and because all costs are mounting.”
