WATER USE RECORD
30m Gallons In 24hrs Last Wednesday for the first time Christchurch residents used more than 30 million gallons of water in 24 hours —“A terrific consumption," the City Council water works engineer (Mr C. W. Batterbury) said yesterday. The figures showed that last Wednesday, when the temperatures reached 90 degrees, 200 gallons of water were used for each resident. “There must be a tremendous wastage of water somewhere,” he said.
The pressures had not dropped dangerously low last Wednesday but between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. they fell sufficiently to show there was an enormous watering of gardens. “This considerable increase in 24 hours is not caused by population rises but by increased watering. People must watch this,” he said. 'They should start to think about these watering habits.” He suggested that during the holidays householders should make sure that they even out their garden hosing. People had to reconsider watering gardens during peak periods of draw-off. “The terrific draw-off puts a high strain on equipment,” he said.
