RACING Three Kings Might Beat Sir Torre

“The Press’' Special Service WELLINGTON. The training report from Woodville that Sir Torre might not be quite forward enough and the likelihood of a slightly easy track has altered early thoughts on the President’s Handicap, first leg of the Manawatu Racing Club’s T.A.B. double today.

Sir Torre’s Riccarton form was good enough for him to win the President’s Handicap, but after he came back from Christchurch Sir Torre was spelled for two weeks and then hacked about his owner’s property for another week.

The trainer, J. P. Carter, expects Sir Torre to race well, but thinks he might not be quite as forward as necessary against some of the more seasoned horses. Mairin will recede in favour if the track eases. Otherwise she will be strongly fancied. She won easily at Feilding at her last start, but was relegated for interference. In view of later form shown by some of those which finished behind her—notably Three Kings, Cabriere Humber and Laramie — Mairin rates an excellent chance. _, The Levin horses, Three Kings and Lucky Son are also in favour and will be more so if the ground eases.

Three Kings worked well on Thursday and his Otaki race has brought him forward. Lucky Son is also fit, but his chance depends mostly on the effectiveness of his wedge plates. The rubber cushioning which relieved his heel trouble last year is not acting so well this time and a new method is to be tried. With Alkira a scratching, Jetmate is selected for the second leg, the Flying Handicap. He has not drawn well, but this might be compensated for by the apparent improvement he has made since his fine last-start win. Jetmate was impressive in his final trial. Topless is almost certain to be prominent nearly all the way. Summer Flight is racing like an improver and so are Gaynova and Count Carmel. Understudy is another which will be well supported after her useful third at Wanganui behind Jetmate and Grand Win. Two feature races are the Manawatu Challenge Stakes,

weight-for-age, and the Eulogy Stakes, for three-year-old fillies. The three-year-old eolt Devastation meets the good older horses, Plantation and Grand Win, in the Challenge Stakes his Riccarton form suggests he will, at least, be equal to them. Alkira, whose jockey will be able to claim an allowance, stands out in the Eulogy Stakes. Happy Jan and Jane Eyre, however, will make it a good race with Alkira.

Another good race should be the Santa Rosa Stakes for two-year-olds. There are six winners in the field and also the highly-regarded Miss Mya, which ran Prince D’Amour close last week.
