Mostly Pictures

Few words and a lot of coloured pictures tell the stories in “The Rich Man and the Shoe-maker,” “The Story of Mr Nero” and “The Three Poor Tailors.” Each of these books for small children is illustrated by a master artist, the first by Brian Wildsmith, the second by Papas, and the third by Victor G. Ambrus. The three books, with colours magnificently reproduced were printed in Austria end are published by the Oxford University Press. "Ringtail the Possum" and “Sebastian and the Sausages” are stories—Che first by Joyce Nicholson, the second by Tim BurstoU—illustrated by black and white photographs. Both are published by A. H. and A. W. Reed. Angus and Robertson have used the same method to illustrate “My Own Little Cat." a story by Marianne Geriand Ekerott. In “My Book of Thumbelina," a much-laved story of

Hans Christian Andersen’s is retold by Jane Carruth and beautifully illustrated in striking colour by Giovetti. Odhams publish this, also two A.B.C. books using animals to illustrate the initial letters of words. Nelson's publish “The Mikado,” in which the Gilbert and Sullivan story is told briefly by Martha Means. End-pieces are two songs from the opera, and characters are drown excitingly in action by Anne and Janet Grahame Johnstone. “Gardens Through the Ages” (Odhams) seta out to tell, and illustrate, the fascinating story of gardens through the centuries. The time-span is tremendous, comprehending the gardens of Babylon, of the Pharaohs, and of Greece and Rome, and the scope is similarly huge, taking in ancient Japanese and Chinese gardens as well as gardens to Europe. Coloured iUusteatkxia are by Elizabeth Ivanovsky.
