BRITAIN’S CANALS

Commercial Future Seen

(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, Dec. 17. There is no commercial future for the narrow boats of Britain’s canals, according to the British Waterways Board’s report, “The Facts About the Waterways.” The canals are divided <n the report into three categories—eight major waterways which could be operated as a viable commercial entity; a further three which, although unlikely to be run at a profit, should be maintained for commercial traffic by payment of a subsidy; and the rest—most of the inland canal system—which must inevitably incur a loss of £600,000 a year.
