PLANT NOT WORKING

Water Problem At McMurdo

Because of a shortage of clean snow at McMurdo Station and the fact that the desalination plant is not working, ships entering Winter Quarters Bay, adjacent to McMurdo Station have been asked to help the station's water supply by pumping fresh water ashore. The commander of Antarctic support activities on the continent (Captain H. H. Kosciusko) has requested ships entering the harbour to pump 5000 gallons ashore. Because of the dean snow shortage it is easier and quicker to get water from the ships which have their own waterproducing facilities. A United States Navyspokesman said at Christchurch airport yesterday that the request is being made to give the snow melters around the base a rest. Although the salt water distillation plant was used for the first time last season, the system ceased working when all the pipe lines feeding fresh water through the base's supply system became frozen. There will have to be replaced and an electrical system added to ensure that they do not freeze up again. It is expected that the plant will be working again later this season.
