A TIME-HONOURED CUSTOM.—The ceremony of Christmas cheeses at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, London, revives a custom dating back to 1691, when the hospital authorities instructed a London cheesemonger to supply the pensioners with cheese from Gloucestershire at 3d a pound. This year’s “cheese” girl is shown holding a piece of cheese to the mouth of one of the pensioners, while another looks on. Both veterans are aged 74.
