CHESS CLUB

Three Life Members Three former presidents of the Canterbury Chess Club will be given life membership when the club holds its nintyninth annual meeting on Saturday. Mr L. J. Mitchell’s membership of the dub goes back to 1913, and has been continuous for most of that time. He was president from 1934 to 1936. In 1938 he went to Greymouth for a period and, while remaining a country member of the Canterbury dub, helped to form the Greymouth Chess and Draughts Club. Mr R. W. Smith was president twice—in 194844 and 195859—and was secretary for a short time. He joined the club about 1933. In 1945, while in Greymouth, he helped to revive the elub there and later formed a chess dub in Murchison. He is still a committee member of the Canter-' bury Club. Mr E. J. Denys joined the club In 1939 and was president in 1942.

In his annual report, to be presented at the meeting, the president (Mr A. S. Hollander) says negotiations are in progress to have several overseas chess players of world rank compete in the dub's centennial tournament, which Is to be held at the end of next year. The dub will offer prizes totalling £lOOO for the event. During the year, £440 was received under the will of Mr E B. Miles, and £5O from the estate of Mr E. Dalton. The amounts were added to the dub’s accumulated funds. Telegraphic Tourney The final of the annual Bledisloe Cup telegraphic chess competition will be held on Saturday between the Dominion Road Chess Club (Auckland) and the Canterbury Chess Club. Canterbury was recently awarded victory in its match against Otago by 8} points to 6). The result was delayed because most of the games had to be judged ami some were disputed. In Saturday's match, Canterbury will play white on odd boards. The Canterbury team, in board order, is: L. Esterman, B. R. Anderson, A. L. Wilkinson, M. Browne, A. J. Nyman, P. W. Boag, R. T. Baker, A S. Hollander, N. M. Cooper, G. C. Cleary, B. Wilkinson, J. Hughes, P. Fraemohs, W. Bereza, and E. B. Stroud. Senior Title To L. Esterman L. Esterman has retained the Canterbury Chess Club’s senior championship title. He will receive his prize at the dub's annual meeting on Saturday. Other award winners are: Championship.—Senior: B. R.
