Hazlett Cup Start For Hushaway Doubtful

Hushaway might not start his holiday racing until Dunedin Gup day. Yesterday J. C. Tomkinson accepted for Hushaway in the James Hazlett Gold Gup, but said there was doubt whether Mr A. N. Smith’s Gount Rendered gelding would start in the limited handicap on the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting.

A final decision on Hushaway’s programe probably will depend on whether Summer Magic remains in the field. When the two clashed over a mile in the Jockey Club Handicap at the New Zealand Cup meeting there was only 11b between them and Summer Magic beat Hushaway by more than two lengths.

On the Hazlett Gold Cup scale Hushaway already meets Summer Magic on 21b worse terms and the Goretrained three-year-old can get further relief if again ridden by R. T. Casey, who can claim an apprentice allowance. Hushaway is one of three horses' Tomkinson will campaign at Dunedin. The others are Shipmate, which also carries Mr Smith’s colours, and Standout, which is raced by his trainer. Shipmate continued his preparation for the Flying Handicap on the first day at Wingatui with an easy six furlongs in training at Riccarton yesterday. A. J. Stokes had had him under a good hold all the way, but he still ran home from the five in Imin 5 3-ssec, the last three in 39 3-ssec. It was one of Shipmate's rare gallops on the plough, which was in excellent order. Except for a series of barrier trials on the course proper, all the fast work was done on that track. Worked Strongly Chatsgay (P. Ry all) and Marlow (P. J. Daly), probably rivals for the Timaru Cup, worked strongly over the last seven furlongs of a mile. They ran the first three in 37 l-ssec, the first half-mile in 50sec, and completed the distance in Imin 28 4-ssec. Chatsgay led by a length at the end.

Sir Limond (R. P. Register) and We’ll Find Out (P. Williams) took 38 l-ssec to run the last three of six furlongs.

Blue Chip (K. Hobson) and Blue Seas (C. T. Wilson) dashed home from the halfmile in 49 l-ssec, the last three furlongs in 36sec. J. S. Shaw said yesterday he would accept for Blue Chip in the Juvenile Handicap at Washdyke, but could not say whether he would start. That decision would be made by the colt’s Sydney owners. Golden Vanity (N. T. Cowles) took Imin 34sec to run seven furlongs. She was not bustled, but quickened slightly to run the last three in 38 l-ssec. Golden Vanity was to have worked with Chatsgay and Marlow, but swung around as the others broke away. Paris Match (N. T. Cowles) and Porgie (P. Williams) took 39 2-ssec to run home from the three. Porgie is an unraced three-year-old Jimmy Flash filly in G. R. Felling's team. Summer Lad (E. G. Low) completed his work by running home from the half-mile in 51sec, the final three furlongs in 38 4-ssec. Tendon Improved Lady York (G. W. Mein) ran the last six furlongs of a

mile in Imin 18 3-ssec. She ran the last half-mile in 50 4-ssec and her final three furlongs in 38sec. The tendon which caused her to be scratched from the Hororata Cup has not given further trouble. Prince Callan (E. G. Low) and Cumberland (G. W. Mein) worked evenly together for seven furlongs. They recorded Imin 30 4-ssec for the distance, ran from the halfmile in 52sec and from the three furlongs in 38 4-ssec. Hawkins (A. R. Swanson) led Hamadan (B. Stechmann) by a neck after six furlongs in Imin 21 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 52sec and the final three furlongs in 39sec. Talic (G. W. Mein) completed pacework by sprinting home from the three furlongs in 39 4-ssec. General Gilbert (J. Kerkvlient) worked keenly over seven furlongs. He ran his first three in 37 l-ssec, his first half-mile in 50 2-ssec and completed the distance in Imin 29sec. Desert Terror (P. Williams) and Major Luca (B. S. Finlayson) ran home from the five furlongs together in Imin 6

Stageland (A. Telfer) could have bettered 54 3-ssec for the last four of five furlongs. He took 40sec for his last three. Gold Shower (P. J. Daly) was a length clear of Clive Bank (R. Murphy) and May Wyne (F. H. Skelton) after running the last three of four furlongs in 37 l-ssec. Donna Gola, Flair Go. and Sabell were successful in their respective heats of the barrier trials on the course proper. In the first heat Fair Gap (E. G. Low) was eased in the last furlong to finish fourth behind Donna Gola (P. J. Daly), Royal Blue (D. Tucker) and Lucky Crown (B. S. Finlayson). In this heat, the only one to be timed, Donna Golda ran the five furlongs in Imin 2 4-ssec. Flair Go (F. H. Skelton) beat Aoudo (D. N. Hadfield) narrowly and Miss Goldwyn (R. Murphy) easily in the second heat. Sabell (D. Tucker) led Coseta (D. N. Hadfield) by a length with Ya Kwanza (B. Stechmann) a neck away at the finish of the third heat
