Medical School Admissions

GV Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Dec. 16. The University of Otago is able to admit to its second - year medical classes in 1966 only 46 per cent of the applicants who have passed the medical intermediate examination, but have no special qualifications. This compares with the admission of 50 per cent of the non-preference applicants to the medical school this year, and 44 per cent last year. The total number of qualified applicants is 236, according to the University Council. Twenty of the 120 places are to be offered to graduates, and one to a Maori student. Ninety-nine places are available for those candidates who base their claim for admission on the results they have obtained; in the medical intermediate examination which may be taken at any of the five universities. A quota system, based on the numbers of non-prefer-ence applicants who have com. pleted the intermediate examination at each university, has

this year distributed these places among the five universities as follows: University of Otago, 72 (167 applicants): University of Canterbury, 81 (20); Victoria University, 10 j (24): University of Auckland, Massey University, 11 Sixty places are available for students beginning the second year of the university course in dentistry. Seven places have been reserved for certain students who may be granted preferential entry, such as students who are sitting special examinations in February and who may be required to repeat second-year ciasses, one place is to be offered tn a graduate, two to Polynesian students and one to a student who is studying in New Zealand under the Aid to Africa plan. Forty-nine places are available at the present time for the 65 qualified students who have applied for admission, and the quota system allocates these places as follows: University of Otago 35.
