One Thing Worse

GV.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 16. Fumigation of travellers’ luggage to prevent outbreaks of animal disease in New Zealand has the full blessing of Federated Farmers, the federation’s president (Mr E. W. McCallum) said today. He was commenting on criticism of fumigation treatment made this week by the president of the New Zealand Rugby Union, (Mr T. 11. Pearce) after his return from South Africa. “If there is anything worse than Mr Pearce being inconvenienced by the fumigation treatment which his luggage had to undergo, it would be an outbreak of disease among

New Zealand's sheep and cattle population,” said Mr McCallum. The federation president added disease could have a disastrous effect on the nation’s economy. “It would seem only commonsense for travellers arriving in New Zealand to be prepared to have their baggage undergo a fumigation process if they have travelled in parts of the world where animal diseases are prevalent,” said Mr McCallum. He pleaded for cooperation from travellers in submitting to necessary work by the Agriculture Department to keep New Zealand free of animal diseases.
