EXPOSED BY CLEARANCE

Ditch On Main South Road Clearance by the Paparua County Council by half a mile of old gorse hedge on the north side of the Main South road, or the Christchurch side of the Hornby railway crossing, has exposed the half-chain of land taken for eventual highway widening. Down the middle of the cleared strip runs a ditch, two to three feet wide and a foot or so deep. It is the remains of an old stock water-race, and takes drainage from the highway. The council has no authority to interfere with the drain, which is a problem for the Ministry of Works. “We lack specific information about the drain, but we do hold half a chain for highway widening along that stretch,” said a Ministry engineer. “It will all become road, perhaps in two or three years.”
