TE PUKE RICE
Crop Inspected By Minister "The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, Dec. 15. A rice-growing project by Mr E. A. Verooe, of Te Puke, was inspected recently by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Taiboys. The rice grown is a Japanese variety. Four acres had been sown with technical autMtnee from the Department of Agriculture. A rice crop has been grown for the last throe yean. Mr Triboys arid the experiment was of great interest and he would be glad to know its economics when the crop was harvested. Mr Vercoe said the area was under water most of the time when the ground was being prepared. There appeared to be a very good crop this year, with rice up to the standards of Asian countries. When it is harvested in April, he expects there will be a yield of two tons to the acre.
Mr Vercoe said that more than 200 tons of rice was used annually in New Zealand. There appeared to be a good future for the crop in the district if the problem of flood control could be solved.
