Aust. Davis Cup Team
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE. The expected Australian Davis Cup team of Roy Emerson, Fred Stolle, John Newcombe and Tony Roche was named in Melbourne yesterday to play Spain in the challenge round.
The team captain, Mr Harry Hopman, who is chairman of the Australian aeiectore, said Bill Bowrey, of Sydney, had had a chance of upsetting the expected team but had been tampered by a beck injury. “This virtually put trim out of the South Australian cbamptonsirips, in which he bad ria last chance to force his
way into the cup side,” Mr Hopman said. The Spaniards have not named their team yet. They have until today to do so. Both teams then have until two days before the challenge round, startinc in Sydney on December 27, to name the teem members who will play. The four members of the Australian team will play
iagainst a United States team at Kooyong on Saturday and Sunday. These matches could decide whether Stoile or Newcombe plays the second cup singles, and which pair Australia wttl use in the challenge round doubles. Stoile will have a Mg burden on Ms shoulders when he plays Arthur Ashe in a singles match on Saturday. Stoile, badly out of form early in the season, has lost twice to Ashe, and has managed to win only one set In the two matches The selectors will be looking for an improvement If Stoile does not produce it, Newcombe’s chances of playing the Davis Cup singles will rise sharply.
