Proposal To Ban Caravans Lapses
A proposal by its traffic committee for a ban on the towing of caravans and trailers on main roads between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at holiday times was not supported by the Waimairi County Council, at its meeting last night.
The committee suggested that the proposal be sent for consideration by the Parliamentary Select Committee, which next month will investigate road safety. The committee’s report drew attention to congestion caused by caravan and trailer traffic. It said that it realised that if the ban was put into effect, more inspectors would be needed. Cr. R. C. Neville said that the proposal had no hope of success, as the times proposed were the times when caravans were on the roads. To ban commercial vehicles at those times would be more sensible.
“This was done with our tongue in our cheek." said Cr. W. E. Cassidy, the committee's chairman. Cr. R. C. Harrow moved that the recommendation be deleted. Cr. Neville seconded this. Slow-moving traffic caused by caravans created a traffic hazard, said Cr. D. B. Rich. “It’s not the answer to put them off the road,” said Cr. Neville. The motion was carried. Mr Rich then moved that the problem of vehicles towing trailers and caravans be referred to the committee. This was seconded by Cr. Cassidy, and carried.
